The author of this book, Mrs. Cicely Margaret Binyon, was very much a part of early Twentieth Century British culture. With her husband Laurence Binyon, poet, playwright, critic and Orientalist, she was well acquainted with noted English artists of the time. This 92-page e-book is the product of her great interest in the nature of artistic expression and fascination with the artists’ intimate thoughts about their work. Her quotes come from a wide range of sources including translations of memoirs and letters, and the words and writings of her contemporaries. The artists speak about many aspects of the nature of art including techniques, personal goals, relationships to society, training, and personal struggles. Artists from Ancient Greece to early Modern times are quoted. Anyone interested in artists and their work will profit from reading their words. $4.95 |

In this Nineteenth Century description of Native American fiber techniques, William H. Holmes focused on early weaving methods discovered by looking at carefully detailed impressions left on pottery shards. The impressions showed the particulars of several fiber construction methods, and the text’s hand-drawn illustrations, done in pen and ink, provide incredible detail that make the techniques used very easy to understand. The modern reader will have to forgive descriptions like “savages” and “primitive” because they speak of an age and are belied by the incredible ingenuity and creativity of the Native American weavers. Thanks to the interest in Native American culture by some dedicated scholar/explorers in the early years of America’s westward expansion, we have insights into their lifestyles. In this e-book we can benefit from the commentaries of Dr, Washington Matthews to learn about the initial development of silversmithing among the Navajo people. His monologue, originally published for the Smithsonian Institution’s Bureau of Ethnology, gives us information about the simple working tools and techniques Navajo silversmiths used to create objects of utility and great beauty. Some of these straight forward techniques may be valuable for artists today. Price: $4.95 |
